Chaotic & violent are...
apt words to describe Cleon Peterson’s aesthetic. Originally from Seattle but based in Los Angeles, Peterson started his art career by doing skateboard design and later found himself working for Shepard Fairey’s studio as a graphic designer before moving towards solo work. The work he creates nowadays features clashing figures that symbolize a struggle between power and submission in the fluctuating architecture of contemporary society.
His mural in the Wynwood Doors for the Wynwood Walls’ 2014 program, the Art of Collaboration is entitled Revenge. In a statement about the mural, Peterson says “abuse of power and violence is ever present in our world and lives, we see it around us every day and play a role in it both directly and indirectly. Even though we’re all involved in violence we’ve developed an apathetic and disassociation towards it. In this painting I want the viewer to reflect on the roles we all play in our world. The image is designed to be confrontational and to demand reaction.”
In addition to his mural in the Wynwood Doors, Peterson also collaborated with Shepard Fairey on a mural outside the Walls.
